LITTLE KNOWN FACTS.
(1). HOW HIGH-CALORIE DESSERTS CAN LEAD TO HEALTHIER MEALS?
Do red velvet cheesecake, French fries or fish fries entice you but you refrain from eating those owing to the high-calories they contain? Take heart. Choosing these high-calorie options first could help you opt for a helathier meal later, says new research. The study showed choosing indulgent dessert first may lead you to eat lower-calorie meals later. "Diners who chose the indulgent dessert as their first dish, followed by a healthier main and side dish to make up for their high-calorie dessert. Diners who picked the healthier dessert may have thought they already had done a good deed for their bodies so they deserved higher-calorie food further down the cafeteria line", said Martin Reimann, Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona in the US. For the study, researchers included 134 diners aged between 18 and 60 with an average age of 32. They placed either a healthy or a less healthy main and side dishes including grilled chicken fajitas and a small small salad or fried fish and French fries. The findings showed that diners who chose the cheesecake first were twice as likely to order the lighter main dish later and ultimately consumed fewer calories than diners who chose the fresh fruits first. "People should be aware that their initial food choices and their mindset may affect the overall healthiness of their meals", added Reimann.
(2). COTTON CANDY WAS ACTUALLY INVENTED BY A DENTIST:
Weirdly enough, cotton candy was actually invented in 1897 by a dentist. He partnered with a confectioner and they created cotton candy, which at the time was called 'fairy floss'. Eventually, another dentist created a similar fairy floss machine in 1921 and called the confection 'cotton candy', which is the name that eventually stuck on.
(3). DRINKING ORANGE JUICE DAILY MAY KEEP STROKES AT BAY:
Drinking orange juice daily may cut your risk of deadly strokes by almost a quarter, suggests a study. The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, showed that people who consumed the juice each day saw a reduction in the risk of a brain clot by 24 percent. Further, the rates of heart disease were also reduced in regular drinkers, who were 12 to 13 percent less likely to suffer with damaged arteries. Fresh fruit juices have long been thought of as healthy. But consumers in recent years have been put off by warnings over their high sugar content. The researchers noted that the health benefits in terms of stroke prevention could outweigh the risks from sugar content.
(4). ICE LOLLY WAS INVENTED IN 1905: The inventor of the ice lolly, California's Frank Epperson, claimed to have first created the frozen pudding in 1905 at the age of 11 after accidentally leaving a glass of soda and water with a mixing stick in it on his porch during a cold night - something that is not 100% proven. The cold San Francisco night breeze caused the mixture to freeze and what little Frank discovered the next morning was an interesting treat that he knew would be a big hit with his friends. Little could he have anticipated the rage it would become a millennium later. Today, billions of popsicles are sold every year across the globe! What is proven, however, is that he did patent the concept of 'frozen ice on a stick' in 1923, something the world over is grateful for. Golas or Indian version of shaved ice are a specialty of Chowpatty Beach in Mumbai. Gola wallahs (crushed-ice sellers) have vast blocks of ice and bottles of brightly coloured fruity syrups! Popular flavours include kala khatta made from a dark blackberry-like fruit; lime and salt; and raw mango. The gola wallah shaves ice off the block then packs it by hand onto a wooden stick.
