From eating healthy to exercising regularly, there are several things you can do to extend your lifespan. Now, a new study suggests that ensuring your spouse is happy could also add years onto your life. Researchers from Tilburg University in the Netherlands suggest that having a happy spouse not only leads to a longer marriage, but also a longer life. In the study, the team surveyed 4,400 couples in the United States of America over the course of eight years. Participants answered various questions, including their life satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, and perceived partner support. At the end of eight years, about 16 percent of participants had died. An analysis of the surveys revealed that those who died tended to report lower relationship satisfaction, lower the satisfaction, and had partners who also reported lower life satisfaction.
These findings suggest that people with happy spouses are more likely to live longer. While the reason for this link remains unclear, the researchers suggest that people with unhappy partners may be less likely to exercise and eat well, leading to a shorter lifespan. Olga Stavrova, an author of the study, said: "If your partner is depressed and wants to spend the evening eating chips in front of the TV - that's how your evening will probably end up looking, as well". The researchers believe the findings could have key implications for how people select partners. Stavrova added: "This research might have implications for questions such as what attributes we should pay attention to when selecting our spouse or partner and whether healthy lifestyle recommendations should target couples (or households) rather than individuals".
