CYCLING CULTURE IN CITIES.

Developing a cycling culture should be high on urban planning agenda if we are to tackle the high levels of air pollution in developing countries. Cities in Europe offer good examples here.
  1. Bike sharing: Allowing rent rides on standardised cycle to and from hubs around the cities, a signal that makes cyclists feel welcome.
  2. Dedicated bike lanes: Placing a barrier between bikes and the rest of the traffic.
  3. Congestion pricing: Charging drivers higher rates for using roads during peak hours.
  4. Charging more for street parking to make driving more expensive.
  5. Adding more bike racks.
Top cities:
  1. Copenhagen, (Denmark).
  2. Amsterdam, (Netherlands).
  3. Utrecht, (Netherlands).
  4. Strasbourg, (France).
  5. Eindhoven, (Holland).
  6. Malmo, (Sweden).
  7. Nantes, (France).
  8. Bordeux, (France).
  9. Antwerp, (Belgium).
  10. Seille, (Spain).
Copenhagen, a biker's paradise:
  1. Everyday, 1.2 million kms. are cycled in Copenhagen.
  2. Favourable cyclcing conditions.
  3. Dense urban proximities.
  4. Short distances and flat terrain.
  5. Bicycle-centric policies of municipal administration.
