HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW CYCLONES?


  1. The high level meeting of the World Meterological Organisation (WMO) and the  United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in 2000 was path breaking as far as the northern Indian Ocean and South Asian countries were concerned. A formula was unanimously decided and agreed upon in 2004. What was the decision? - Naming the Cyclone.
  2. Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. There was something peculiar about the names. They craeted new phonetic alphabets of names from A to W, leaving out Q, U, X, Y and Z. A few protests changed the procedure of naming and in 1979, a new 'thing' was added. What was it? - Men's names were introduced (it previously featured only women's names).
  3. In October, 2016, a natural depiction over the seas distracted the terrible impact of this hurricane on the ground in Haiti. An infrared satellite image captured an eerie site when this hurricane moved over western Haiti. The depiction, obtained by the NASA Earth Science Office, appeared to be a sinister-looking skull, with the eye of the storm appearing to be an eye. Which hurricane is this? - Hurricane Matthew.
  4. The 1970 cyclone's relief measures got a severe blow due to the Indo-Pakistan hotilities. It struck present-day Bangladesh and West Bengal. The dissatisfaction over failure of the relief efforts by the national government gave a landslide victory to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the national elections.   5. Cyclones in this country are common due to the island's geographical location in the tropics. The cyclone of 1892 was most devastating and nearly destroyed its capital city. The city is named in honour of King Louis XV. Which city is this? - Port Louis, Mauritius.
  6. In 1971, civil engineer Herbert & meterologist Robert crafted a scale for the better predictions and forecasting of the stroms. This scale categorises hurricanes on a scale from 1 to 5. Category 1 hurricanes are the weakest and 5's most intense. How do we know the scale? - The Saffir-Simpson scale.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS DISCOVER TOMBS IN EGYPT DATING BACK 2,000 YEARS.

Egypt's antiquities ministry said on 14th August, 2017 (Tuesday) that archaeologists have discovered three tombs dating more than 2,000 years, from the Ptolemaic Period. The discovery was made in the Nile valley province of Minya south of Cairo, in an area known as al-kamin al-Sahrawi. The unearthed sarcophagi and clay fragments suggest that the area was a large necropolis from sometime between the 27th Dynasty and the Greco-Roman period. ----------------------------------------------------------------

ANCIENT INDIA'S LINKS TO TODAY.

You may not have heard of Shu-ilishu but he is a man of great significance. He reaches out to us from almost 4,300 years ago, through a small Akkadian cylinder seal now housed at the Louvre Museum in Paris. On the seal, you will find an image of him talking to two men. The inscription describes Shu-ilishu as the interpreter of the Meluhhan language. 'Meluha' was, in all probability, the term used by ancient Mesopotamians for the Indus Valley region, and the presence of an oficial 'interpreter' there indicates just how important the steady flow of good from the Indian sub-continent was.  Precious and vibrant lapis lazuli stones, carnelian beads, wood and even dogs would go across via old trade routes and ports like Lothal (in modern-day Gujarat) to Akkad, capital of the Akkadian Empire (03rd millennium BCE) and now in modern-day Iraq.
